The contented feeling that washes over you after completing a lovely day’s walking in a beautiful part of the country can leave you beaming and thinking you’ve actually been on a holiday.
So walking in a group where you get all the benefits of a good day out but with the added bonus of having the company of a friendly bunch of people who like nothing more than having a natter and a laugh, can only amplify that uplifting feeling.
Over the years we’ve seen countless numbers of people joining one of our sociable guided day walks who have been a tad nervous or slightly shy, only to see them laughing with the best of them by the end of the walk!
Some people come on our day walks so they have the reassurance of an expert guide leading the way while they get to explore a new part of the country, whether it’s Hebden Bridge in West Yorkshire or Worcestershire’s Malvern Hills.
Others use the opportunity to get in some training for a future challenge by coming on one of our more active day hikes such as the Peak District’s Lathkill Dale Day Walk.
Just as many people though are looking for a more leisurely day out which serves as a taster or confidence-booster either because they are new to walking or they want to dip a toe into the Large Outdoors experience before committing to a longer trip.
As with all our walks, the secret to our more leisurely outings is to find the routes that are packed with interest – whether it’s seeing a mass of seabirds on Yorkshire’s Bempton Cliffs, admiring the grandness of Blenheim Palace or revelling in the beauty of Dovedale in Derbyshire.
Alongside the sociability factor, there’s also something sneaky about group walking. Without realising it at the time many people will end the walk and find they’ve completed more miles or covered tougher terrain than they would have previously thought possible.
And that, my friends, is the power of walking with others – from the cheery motivation that flows within the group through to the unexpressed thoughts of ‘well if they can do it, so can I’ – there are so many benefits to be had!
