Yorkshire Three Peaks - Frequently Asked Questions:
-
The Yorkshire Three Peaks route is a 25-mile circular trail that takes in the summits of Ingleborough, Whernside, and Pen-y-Ghent.
We walk this route in reverse to the traditional direction, tackling Ingleborough first, followed by Whernside, and finally Pen-y-Ghent. This approach often makes for a quieter experience, as fewer groups reach the summits at the same time. However, the Yorkshire Three Peaks is a popular route, so don’t expect to have the peaks to yourself!
Our Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge Weekend offers the added convenience of starting and finishing the route from the doorstep of our accommodation.
-
Yes, the Yorkshire Three Peaks is a challenging walk and often considered one of the toughest in Yorkshire. Covering 25 miles with 1,585m (5,200ft) of ascent, it’s a long and demanding day.
To complete the challenge within the 12-hour timeframe, you’ll need a good level of fitness and the ability to handle steep ascents and descents. Training for long-distance walks with hills will make the challenge much more enjoyable.
In Large Outdoors terms, this walk is graded as Tough (Walking).
-
Our guides set a pace designed to ensure the group can complete the challenge within 12 hours. While they do their best to accommodate the group’s abilities, it’s important to follow their advice and maintain the required pace.
There are cut-off times at certain points along the route, which your guide will communicate to ensure safety and fairness for the whole group. Training to maintain a pace of 3-4 mph (5-6.5 km/h), including uphill walking, will help you prepare.
-
Your guide will monitor the group and provide encouragement to help you maintain the necessary pace. However, if it becomes clear that you cannot keep up, you may be asked to leave the challenge at a safe point.
If you feel you are struggling at any time, it’s essential to let your guide know immediately so they can assist. Bring money and a mobile phone in case you need to arrange transport back to the start point or your accommodation.
-
Please see our General (Walking) Kit List, which applies to the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge.
You’ll need to bring all items listed in our General (Walking) Kit List, including:
Comfortable, worn-in walking boots.
Warm and waterproof clothing.
Plenty of food and water (at least 2-3 litres).
These items are compulsory for your safety and enjoyment. Arriving without them may result in you being unable to take part, as per our Terms & Conditions.
-
There are public toilets near the start point at the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority car park (what3words: ///limelight.sharp.pelting). After Ingleborough, there is often the option to use facilities at a farm shop for a small fee or with a purchase.
These facilities are independently run, so availability cannot be guaranteed.
-
While there are occasional stops along the route, including a farm shop and a refreshment van after Whernside, these cannot be guaranteed. We recommend carrying all the water and food you need for the day.
-
If you think you’re developing a blister, notify your guide immediately. They can help you apply a plaster and adjust your footwear to prevent further discomfort.
To avoid blisters, wear high-quality walking socks and well-worn boots. Pack spare socks for the walk, as fresh socks can make a big difference if your feet become uncomfortable.
-
We strongly recommend staying with the group and guide throughout the challenge. If you choose to leave, you will no longer be part of the Large Outdoors organised walk, and we will not be responsible for your wellbeing.
Please notify your guide if you decide to leave and arrange for a trusted third party to act as your emergency contact.
-
Both items are essential for the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge:
Mobile Phone: For emergencies and to notify your guide if you leave the group.
Money: For parking fees, toilet facilities, or refreshments at the farm shop or refreshment van.
There’s generally good mobile signal at the start point and on the summits, but it may be patchy between peaks.
