Grab a bit of Hygge with Large Outdoors

Brits are being reminded of the joy to be had in Hygge, the Danish lifestyle trend that involves creating a warm atmosphere, savouring the simple things in life and enjoying the company of like-minded people.

Guided walking specialist Large Outdoors has some new weekends that are ideal for shaking off those winter blues by embracing the Hygge concept.

Each weekend involves striding out for bracing country walks during the day with a small group of fellow walkers and re-fuelling breaks in tearooms serving great cake before retreating back to a cosy base where the warmth of a log fire and hearty food work their Hygge-magic.

North York Moors & Coast weekend

For this three-night break guests stay at High Mill in Pickering, formerly a Victorian mill owner’s house that is now a self-catering cottage with ringside seats for watching the steam trains trundle by.

Three days of guided walks explore the diverse landscape of the North York Moors National Park, including the countryside around Rosedale Abbey that was shaped by the ironstone mining boom in the 1800s and the magnificent coastline between Staithes and Sandsend.

At the end of each day there’s a log burner to return to, to get the toes toasty, evening meals prepared by the Large Outdoors host for two of the nights and a final evening meal in the local pub in Pickering.

Cost: from £185 per person including three nights’ accommodation, all meals except Sunday evening, qualified guide and Large Outdoors host who stays with the group throughout the weekend. We no longer offer this trip but you can explore all of our North York Moor trips here…

The Gower Coast

With a dramatic coastline to explore, numerous walking routes and a hostel located on the southern-most tip of the Peninsula, this weekend is a fine way to get a Hygge fix.

Guests can look forward to bracing walks along the headlands and across empty sandy beaches before returning to the hostel for afternoon tea huddled around the log burner and an opportunity to simply enjoy a bit of quality down time.

Breakfast and the three-course evening meals are prepared by the Large Outdoors host and served in the dining room where huge windows provide a fantastic opportunity for watching storms surge across the sea.

Cost: From £135 per person including two nights’ accommodation, all meals except Sunday lunch, qualified guide and host who remains with the group throughout the weekend. View our Gower coast weekend here….

Yorkshire Dales

With invigorating winter walks ascending the peaks around Ingleton or following meandering rivers through quiet hamlets the weekend’s walking will certainly be varied.

After a day spent striding outside, guests can retreat to the luxurious Warth House self-catering farmhouse knowing there are plenty of comfy sofas to sink into, a log burner and heaps of homemade cake on offer.

For this weekend, Large Outdoors is pulling out all the stops serving three course meals for the Friday and Saturday evening, complete with wine and aperitifs. For guests staying on the Sunday evening, there’s a visit to the nearby pub.

We no longer offer this trip but you can view our full range of trips in the Yorkshire Dales here…
