In a Nutshell:
Appreciate the ‘other worldly’ character of Dartmoor’s brooding beauty with windswept moorland, wild ponies and dramatic tors.
Switch off from everyday life with scenic guided walks and cosy accommodation.
Leave all the logistics, route finding and cooking to us.
Enjoy good conversations and laughter with a friendly group of people.
How do we grade our walks?
Discover why Dartmoor is wonderful for a sociable walking weekend…
Characterised by wild open moorland, dramatic rocky outcrops called tors and river valleys, Dartmoor swirls with legends and possesses a brooding beauty that makes it perfect for a mini break with two days of scenic walks.
For this weekend we’re staying in the YHA Dartmoor, a hostel that is made for socialising given the log burner, comfy sofas and outlook across the surrounding moors.
As the group gathers you’ll find conversations easily flow and continue right through the weekend. We eat together in the hostel each evening with meals cooked by your Large Outdoors host. During the day experienced guides will lead the group on a choice of two walks, one a slightly more active route while the other is generally easier and more leisurely.
Overall the whole weekend is geared towards switching off from normal life, having a chance to explore a different part of the country and meeting some lovely people in the process.
Suggested Itinerary
Day 1
The kettle is on and the Large Outdoors host will be there doing the meeting and greeting with the first arrivals from 5pm onwards. We help each guest settle in and introduce them to the rest of the group before we turn our attention to serving the evening meal at 8pm, usually a one-pot main course followed by a heaving cheeseboard.
By then conversations will be in full flow, the log burner will be lit, and we’ll outline the walking plans for the next two days.
Day 2
After breakfast we pack up our own lunches for the day ahead, lace up the boots and head outside. Today there will be two guided walk options – one more active than the second, leisurely alternative – both offering routes that will make the most of the beautiful surroundings.
Our guides will take into account the weather when they decide on the exact routes but there will be a mix of forest trails, easier strolls alongside the River Dart and exhilarating hikes onto the higher moorland with its panoramic views and the distinctive rocky Tor landscape to explore.
When we arrive back at the hostel there will be plenty of time to chill out whether it’s carrying on the conversations in the lounge or simply enjoying a bit of downtime reading a good book.
Tonight’s meal will be served at the hostel.
Day 3
After breakfast we pack up our belongings.
Once again there will be two walk options which may involve a short drive to the start to explore a different stretch of Dartmoor.
We aim to finish at lunchtime when there’s the option to join the rest of the group for one final meal in a café or tea room (NB: meal price not included in the trip package) before we sadly say farewell and return home.
Please Note: On some days there could be a short drive required - where activities don’t start from the door of the accommodation. We don't include transport and participants normally car share.
