For this weekend you’ll gain a whole new perspective on this beautiful area by plunging into its tranquil lakes, streams, and pools. Whether you’re new to wild swimming or a seasoned, wetsuit-clad aficionado, you’ll have a fantastic, unforgettable experience in the Lakes.

You’ll be fully supported by an expert Large Outdoors guide - with transport provided - over this weekend. Your guide will who’ll sort out the locations, navigation, and make sure everybody knows what they’re doing. Together with other like-minded swimming souls, you’ll soon see why wild swimming, surrounded by the serene landscape of the Lakes, is a grand way of pressing the ‘pause’ button on normal hectic life.

Please note the information below gives a brief outline of how we’ll aim to spend each day. The weather, water levels and group’s abilities will dictate the exact swim locations and routes your trip takes - there are lots of possibilities that we could enjoy.

Suggested Itinerary:

Here’s what we’ve got planned - of course, we may have to offer alternatives or make amendments if the weather misbehaves or other unexpected situations arise!

Day 1

You are welcome to arrive at the hostel from 5pm, where your Large Outdoors host will be ready to greet you and help you settle in. This wild swimming group (maximum 8 participants) will be sharing the hostel with other Large Outdoors participants enjoying another outdoor weekend, but as your small group you’ll have a dedicated guide and transport provided.

This evening is all about getting to know your fellow swimmers and the other participants, unloading from the stress of the week, and chatting about the weekend ahead. Dinner will be served at 8pm, and we’ll discuss the next couple of days over good food.

Day 2

After breakfast and making up our packed lunches for the day, we’ll head out for an introductory swim. Here your guide will take you through some essential techniques – from breathing efficiently through to sighting – and following safe swimming practices that will enable you to soon enjoy the freedom of gliding through water in some of nature’s greatest beauty spots.

After a few hours we’ll break for lunch and find a warm spot as we go through the options for the afternoon. We could head up a trail to a beautiful, tranquil tarn, or discover a plunging-in point - think waterfalls cascading into pools, and along mountain streams.  Wherever we end up, it’ll certainly be beautiful, serene and wild!

After the day’s activities we’ll return to our accommodation to allow enough time to freshen up, get warm, and relax with some hot drinks before dinner, once again prepared by your Large Outdoors host. Here you’ll meet up with the other participants again and can swap stories about the day’s outdoor adventures.

Day 3

After breakfast we’ll pack up and check out of the accommodation, leaving our base ready to take to the water once more. Where we decide to swim will depend on the weather, water levels, and what the group wants to achieve. There are so many options to choose from!

Some options could include a dive into the delights of Derwentwater; languishing in Loughrigg Tarn; or an utterly lovely dip in Ullswater.

Wherever we choose to swim, we’ll aim to finish at around lunchtime. Perhaps you’d like to enjoy a final cuppa or lunch together with your new swim buddies, before it’s time to head home. What an amazing way to spend a weekend in the Lakes!

  • Please see our Wild Swimming Kit List.

The compulsory items are selected for your safety, which is of paramount importance to us at Large Outdoors. Each participant should have the items listed.

WETSUIT: Although we appreciate many people skin dip and prefer to spend time in cold water without a wetsuit, a wetsuit is essential on this trip for a number of reasons.

We will aim to be doing more than one swim/dip each day we’re out - the cumulative effect of the cold means you will get colder throughout the day and without a wetsuit may end up missing chances to swim.

Wetsuits provide extra protection too - from rough rocks, barnacles etc. There may be chances to skin dip over this trip, but it is essential to have a wetsuit with you.

You can read our blog on exactly why we insist on wetsuits here.

Please note that you must have your own wetsuit as we are unable to lend you one. If you need any advice on the best type of wetsuit to purchase ahead of this trip, please feel free to explore this Blog post.

  • Although you will need to be a confident swimmer, you do not need to be long-distance swimmer by any means. You do not need to have prior experience of wild or outdoor swimming.

We are not aiming to swim miles, instead enjoying a greater number of more leisurely wild swims, where you can really take in the views and scenery and appreciate being immersed in the natural world. We will not be heading into open water.

If you want to sit a swim out as well your more than welcome to stay in the minibus or enjoy the local scenery whilst we swim.
