A Fun and Sociable Walking Weekend Based in a Historic 12th Century Castle

Experience a unique walking weekend in the Forest of Dean, staying in the historic 12th-century St Briavels Castle. Join Large Outdoors for a sociable weekend of guided walks through the enchanting Wye Valley, scenic forest trails, and a segment of the Offa’s Dyke Path. Each day offers a Leisurely or more Active option, adjusted for weather and terrain.

St Briavels Castle, once a royal hunting lodge, provides an atmospheric base for this weekend. Now a spacious hostel, it’s the perfect place to unwind after a day’s adventure.

Suggested Itinerary

Here’s what we’ve got planned - of course, we may have to offer alternatives or make amendments if the weather misbehaves or other unexpected situations arise!

Day 1 – Welcome Evening

Arrive at St Briavels Castle from 5pm onwards, where your Large Outdoors host will greet you and get you settled in. Relax, explore the castle’s nooks and crannies, and mingle with your fellow walkers over a cup of tea or glass of wine. Dinner will be served in the Great Hall around 8pm, giving us a chance to chat through the weekend’s walking options.

Day 2 – Guided Walks

After a hearty breakfast, choose from a selection of guided walks tailored to the group. Routes might include:

  • Redbrook-St Briavels Castle Circular (9 miles): A varied walk through the Wye Valley and along sections of the Offa’s Dyke Path, with riverside views and peaceful woodlands.

  • St Briavels Circular (10 miles): A more challenging route with a couple of rewarding climbs, offering great viewpoints and passing through historic villages.

In the evening, wind down at the castle with a home-cooked meal and time to share stories from the day.

Day 3 – Shorter Walk & Farewell

After breakfast and packing up, join us for a relaxed, guided walk to make the most of the morning. The route will be shorter, allowing time to enjoy the surroundings before everyone heads home. Depending on the group’s plans, there’s the option to grab a quick coffee or lunch nearby before saying our goodbyes and setting off, refreshed and recharged from the weekend.

Note: Some routes may require a short drive, so car sharing is encouraged.

  • The Forest of Dean is an area of geographical, historical, cultural, and recreational interest in the western part of Gloucestershire. It’s an ancient forest and natural sanctuary that has changed use many times over the centuries - from medieval hunting forest to an important source of timber, charcoal production, iron working, and coal mining.

The Forest of Dean and the Wye Valley are “where England meets Wales”, and many of the walking routes in the area see you hopping over the border several times. An area of breathtaking viewpoints, iconic ruins, unique attractions and charming villages and market towns, it is a walker’s paradise.
