Suggested Itinerary

Here’s what we’ve got planned - of course, we may have to offer alternatives or make amendments if the weather misbehaves or other unexpected situations arise!

Day 1

The village of Hathersage is seen as the gateway to the Peak District. It seems a world away from urban life and yet it’s only 11 miles from Sheffield and has a train station making it possible to have a car-free trip.

Our hostel is handily close to all the village’s amenities and you are welcome to arrive any time after 5pm when our Large Outdoors host will be there with a welcoming smile and the offer of a cup of tea.

With everybody gathered and chatting away, we prepare a home cooked meal for the group which is served at 8pm, while we outline the plan for the weekend.

Day 2

Easier walks or more challenging yomps exploring the striking high-level surroundings.

Having tucked into breakfast, we pack up lunch and head outside. There are options today depending on whether you prefer to have an easier walk or a more full-on hike (subject to participant numbers). Some will be routes we can do straight from the door while others will include a short drive.

Each route will visit some of the best scenery in this part of the Peak District. For instance:

  • A circular walk from Hathersage up to Stanage Edge to admire the lofty cliff-edge views before heading across moorland to reach the boulder-strewn Higger Tor.

  • A variety-packed walk with woods, moorland, pretty villages and dramatic views as we visit Froggatt Edge, Curbar Edge and Baslow Edge.

Once back in Hathersage there’s plenty of time for an amble through the village, perhaps partaking of a pint in a pub or afternoon tea in a café before relaxing in the company of the others over an evening meal back at the hostel.

Day 3

A leisurely walk exploring the Peak District’s gentler side.

Today we have a leisurely breakfast and pack up before vacating the hostel.

With an array of beautiful, undulating lower level walks close by we choose one of the routes and head outside.

For instance we may head over to the y-shaped Ladybower Reservoir, an impressive stretch of water that was once the practice site of the Dambusters for their daring low level World War ll flying mission. From here there’s everything from shoreline walks to routes involving a bit of a climb through stunning woodland and onto open moorland.

Today’s walk tends to be shorter to give people enough time to travel home - we aim to finish around lunchtime and perhaps enjoy a final meal in a pub or café before we go our separate ways.
