A wonderfully wild way to experience the Lake District…

This one’s special. For this trip you’ll leave your car behind, hiking in the Lake District’s fells with a stay at the most remote hostel in England - the legendary Black Sail. Maybe you’ve stayed in accommodation that calls itself a ‘rural retreat’ before - well, Black Sail is really rural, and a proper retreat from the noise and busyness of everyday life.

Pre-trip note: You won’t be able to rely on your car to ferry your belongings to the hostel and there’s no shuttle service, so please make sure you travel light - you’ll enjoy the 6-mile walk in and 7.5 mile walk out so much more with a lighter backpack! Bedding is provided by the hostel but you’ll need your own towel and don’t forget to check out the Compulsory Kit List in the ‘Good to Know’ section below.

Suggested Itinerary

Here’s what we’ve got planned - of course, we may have to offer alternatives or make amendments if the weather misbehaves or other unexpected situations arise!

  • You’ll meet your Large Outdoors walk leader and the rest of the group at 2pm in Bowness Knot car park. We’ll run through the plan and safety briefing, make any weather-based route adjustments, and set off!

Today’s walk is around 6 miles (9.5km). We’ll skirt the northern shore of Ennerdale Water, the most westerly of the Lake District’s lakes, in the wonderfully peaceful Ennerdale valley, before joining a wooded path that follows the River Liza. As the valley narrows, you’ll become surrounded by spectacular peaks including Pillar, Black Crag, Looking Stead, and Hay Stacks. You’ll cross streams, pass a disused quarry site, and take in stunning, craggy views, with no settlements for miles around, from the valley-bottom.

Once you arrive at Black Sail hostel, it’s time to drop your bag and put your feet up - you’ve earned it! We’ll share cups of tea, revelling in the glow of a good day’s walking. You’ll enjoy a meal provided by the accommodation with your fellow walkers, then perhaps head back outside to watch the sunset and gaze at the stars - a must when in a remote setting like Black Sail’s.

  • After breakfast, we’ll grab packed lunches, get our boots and kit on and head out the door. This is our big mountain walking day. Around 7.5 miles (12km), with 1,258m (4,127ft) of total ascent, you’ll bag Hay Stacks (a favourite of Wainwright’s), Great Gable, and Kirk. From your incredible vantage point throughout the day, you’ll take in breathtaking views into Ennerdale and Buttermere valleys, and maybe if conditions are right, even out to St Bees Head on the coast.

As with all walking trips, it’s important to be mindful of the weather conditions, so your walk leader will decide on the exact route and have other options on standby should the conditions be less than ideal.

We’ll end up back at Black Sail for another meal and an evening of serious relaxation with your fellow walkers - you will have earned it!

  • After breakfast and packing up our belongings, we’ll leave Black Sail behind and head out over Pillar, giving you the opportunity to bag another Wainwright.

This is another big mountain day of a similar distance to the day before, around 7.5 miles (12km), though with significantly less ascent (approximately 767m/2,516ft). After reaching Pillar, it’s downhill into the beautiful Ennerdale valley to follow Ennerdale Water back to our cars. From there, we’ll head our separate ways, feeling triumphant after a weekend of brilliant walks in one of the most remote stretches of England.

(Other hostel users will also be staying at the accommodation.)

DON’T FORGET: As we leave our cars behind for this weekend and the hostel is remote, you might want to bring a few other things:

    • Any snacks you’d like for the weekend, to enjoy whilst walking or at the hostel.

    • Flip-flops, sandals, slippers or hut shoes, so you don’t have to wear your walking boots all evening. Please note the toilets and showers are accessed from outdoors so you will need something suitable for your feet.

    • Waterproof bags to keep your evening clothes, towel and toiletries in - either plastic bags or dry-bags. Then you can leave these belongings on your bed at the hostel while out on the Saturday walk if you like, so your backpack’s not as heavy.

    • What level of fitness is needed?
This trip is rated Active Plus. Don’t forget you’ll be carrying all your belongings on Days 1 and 3, when we walk the 6 miles in to and 7.5 miles out of the hostel. There’s quite a bit of ascent/descent involved across the three days too. Make sure you’ve practised walking with all your kit and your backpack is comfortable when walking all day. Click here to see Large Outdoors’ Experience Levels.

    • Can I attend on my own?
Absolutely. The majority of our participants are solo travellers and adventurers. Plenty of fun, laughter and numerous long-term friendships (and a few marriages!) have begun on Large Outdoors experiences since 2008, so there’s no need to feel worried about your first experience, or indeed trying a new type of outdoor activity, with us.

    • I am currently on a specific diet / have an allergy - can you cater for me?
Unfortunately, we are generally unable to cater for a wide variety of diets or food preferences due to the nature and cost of our catered trips and/or the use of shared kitchens. However, we can offer vegetarian meals, vegan meals, provide meals with gluten* free ingredients, and/or provide dairy* free meals - these options can be selected when booking. *Please see our general FAQs for more information about dietary options.

    • What transportation is provided during this experience?
We do not provide any transport for this experience. You will be walking from the meeting location to the hostel (6 miles) on Day 1 and back out from the hostel (7.5 miles) on Day 3.

    • Can I bring my dog?
Dogs are not allowed on this experience, except for trained assistance dogs. If you wish to bring your trained assistance dog, please let us know in advance of booking so we can discuss the itinerary and any activity/equipment/accommodation, and of course additional safety requirements or considerations that may be necessary.

  • The Lake District National Park needs no introduction, as it’s a veritable outdoors-lovers paradise. Stretching 2,292 square kilometres, it’s the largest National Park in England and second largest in the UK. It’s home to some brilliant wildlife, England’s highest peak (Scafell Pike), and its largest natural lake, Windermere, at 11 miles long.

The area we’ll be walking through on this adventure is spectacular, with pristine lakes, carpets of green, and stunning fells. You’ll even see and have the opportunity to bag a couple of Wainwright’s favourite fells.
